I heard some reports of input problems with XFree 4.3 so maybe it's the case too on your box. If you upgraded X, did you retest the 20030115 snapshot on your current configuration ? (btw, i believe it is relevant to note that i am running wine in 'desktop' mode, so that half life runs in a window encompassed by the wine desktop.)
