Given that X2 uses D3D8, I also tried Olivers d3d8-wrapper patch - makes no difference, except that with the patch the splash screen is messed up. If the version it worked with was recent (less thatn 6 months) then the best way to fix it is to find the patch that broke it through regression testing.
