Earlier wine-versions are producing similar messages but are worse: They run into the deadlock prior to clicking on the open-button (tested with 20040719, 20041019 and 20050524). As there are no problems opening documents in Word and Excel I supposed a problem with the preview of the file-open-dialog in Powerpoint. But in wine-20050628 the preview is working fine. Furthermore is see you used crossover, maybe you could just try cvs wine, see if it gets any better.
