The hang seems to occur at particularly busy points in the game. When asked, Steam link to this page: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5034-EIPV-6426 which suggests that the problem is running out of "paged pool". Unfortunately the rest of this link is Windows specific. No crash though.
