At some point after (after loading savefile, a few seconds after, a few minute after, not predictable) it would crash X. But on loading it from command line, the program does not start at all (and thus does not start X), and a bug box pops up and the backtrace attached is dumped. Instead, the first duplicate file found is deleted. (The deletion is a known issue with the program when hard link creation fails for whatever reason.) Though the error that I am currently running into at least has a kernel patch already.
