At least on my Fedora 16, gcc version 4.6.3 20120306 (Red Hat 4.6.3-2) still misaligned context buffers, causing segfault. I added "-mpreferred-stack-boundary=2" to CFLAGS to force gcc to realign the stack in function prolog. The log shows Vertex shader compilation failed: :19:1: Warning: Newline in string constant encounterd (started line 18) native d3dx9_36 works around the problem. Digging into it a bit, I see that the game uses shader assembly, and one of the lines of source is def c96, -1, 1, 1, 1 ; somewhere I've got a bug. flipping the vectors with this fixes it.
