Maybe that bug should be split into two bugs because the IDirect3D3 issue is actually blocking the first one. The backtrace from initial bug reporter indeed shows a crash in a module named "mask" =>1 0x004fb9e0 in mask (+0xfb9e0) (0x77abc790) So your finding of "KingsQuestMask" as application compatibility item indicates the game might be really broken or relying on undocumented behaviour. Windows has so called "application shims" that allow gazillion of broken/bad behaving apps to run on newer Windows versions. At runtime application signatures are matched in a database and application specific shims (dlls) are loaded that hook APIs and redirect it to alternate implementation. These implementations carry specific workarounds/hacks. And no, reverse engineering of Windows dlls is not acceptable, it's standard Wine policy. Wine has a black box/clean room engineering approach. The presence of this "KingsQuestMask" shim might indicate that this game is somehow broken and/or relies on old or undocumented API behaviour which requires a specific workaround in newer Windows versions. I'm not sure but did you read my comment #19 ? I already did an analysis some time ago and gave a possible hint. See www.securom.com/emulation for more details"). This seems to be a known problem on SecuROMs end ([0]), as they provide people who complain about this with a link to [1], when the instructions of [0] failed/you provided them with a diagnosis. Hence I'm not entirely sure, whether this is Wine's fault or a overzealous SecuROM. Anyway, if you need something else, please let me know.
