For games that do not support a windowed run mode (e.g. Civilization IV), the only way to make the window go away is to exit the game before attempting to access the Steam client window. On Windows: There is a flickering rectangle in the upper corner of the window On Wine: The rectangle is not affected until a message is posted from the system Example compiled and tested with g++ 4.7.1 TDM-GCC 64 bit on Windows 7 64 bit.
