This is needed by some games to detect the hardware on the running system. For example, EA's Need for Speed III includes a 3dsetup.exe program that queries HKEY_DYN_DATA\Config Manager\Enum\*\HardWareKey to detect graphics hardware. Seems like there is an issue how they do threading or something is triggered in wine.
