With winetricks wininet I'm able to register The Witcher, however when installing 1.4 (Enhanced Edition) patch, it is trying to recheck the registration. There is an input dialog asking for name and password, but nothing happens when you type in correct name and password and click OK, and after some time there is an error dialog "The operation has timed out." This seems to me like some network component issue, I've tried winetricks crypt32 and secur32 with no luck, although the error message is different with native crypt32: "The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive". It works on Wine... as long as you press Play once, and never need to pause or rewind. I assume this is prompted by an ERROR_NO_MORE_FILES which causes InternetGetLastResponseInfo() to return the above string. The call that gets the error is InternetReadFile(). This error did not occur under 1.6 on my Mageia system. To be certain, I removed the Mageia RPM, downloaded 1.6, 1.6.1, and 1.7.7 from sourceforge, and built each of them from source. 1.6 does not cause the error, 1.6.1 does, and 1.7.7 does not. X eats 40% CPU while PS:T is loading - quite consistent number, and so is 6 minutes loading time. It happens when the game is starting and also when I press Alt-F4 in game and it tries to pop Windows dialogue for quit confirmation. Log attached. Loading times between areas are normal, so are saving/loading games.
