The launcher is required to launch games like Starcraft 2, World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Overwatch and Heros of the STorm. Bug #40905 is about another application needing the same method. Maybe the bug reports can be merged. I checked out the current git version and far from fixing the texture issue, Steam (latest version, presumably) itself now refused to start. I have done a regression test and identified the regression.
