The installation fails because a directory created by the installer through CreateDirectoryW ends up with the permission bits set to 0. It will compare a given version against the version of a regkey on your machine. Sometimes the installer would just bail out silently during download. Prerequisite: 'winetricks -q dotnet20 dotnet40' Unfortunately +relay or even repeated installer runs succeed most of the time so it's not easily to reproduce/track down (also depends on client connection to server). Also running the inner installer under debugger changes symptoms. I've not found any useful info on MSDN about a 32 KiB limit on winhttp chunk size. Maybe the MS guys who wrote the installer made some assumption about some underlying native winsock implementation limitation on Windows. It might be interesting to see what max. chunk size native winhttp reports to clients. My feeling is that the load / resource consumption of the system is the factor that makes the difference. When the load on the system increases the chances for a successful install are better. If the installer does not work, i start the Eclipse IDE, than it works most of the time.
