As a further note, using thirds party Wine runners resolves the thread crashing
issue. Specifically, I installed the Lutris Wine-GE runner from here:

https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/wine-ge-custom

Now the Battle.net launcher in the existing Wine prefix works successfully.
