I am now back to wine-6.16-1.fc35.i686 and happy camping has returned.

For anyone with this problem, Fedora 36's repo only has version 7 in it.  To
get version 6 back, I used the following command:

   # dnf --setopt=excludepkgs="" downgrade wine --releasever=35

meaning I downloaded Wine from Fedora 35's repo.
