so here is an example of a libre OS that is still available, and is
still being maintained (despite the difficulty of doing so).

it is not "theoretical" that there are other OSes other than linux-based
ones, it is *real* that there are other OSes other than linux-based ones.

i trust therefore that this patch - now staged - is portable across
multiple POSIX compliant OSes.
