When I upgraded to a quad core cpu, this problem still persisted with the latest version of wine, but when using wine1.2-rc1, and maybe a few versions up, I'm not sure, the problem seemed to go away. I've gone a fair way into the game with the following setup. AMD 955 quad core cpu, NVIDIA 260 gtx video card, wine1.2-rc1 with xi2 mouse hack compiled from source.
