If, as it seems, the check relies on the mentioned stub (as the W version
always returns failure), why would changing file permissions make a difference
?

Again, that's just guesswork, but a relevant test would be tweaking the stub.

Only if that fails, a more verbose debug log (with file access channel) would
be a next step.
