I have not had problems with this in a while, now; even with a recent
re-install.  Although not positive, I think this is related to an addition to
my xorg.conf:

Secion "Device"
    [...]
    Option    "ModeValidation"    "DoubleScanPriority"
    [...]
EndSection

Either way, the issue is now solved for me as well.
