It seems it does not work due to an "executable permissions" problem combined
with a "wineserver is already running" problem. Wine 1.1.7 WORKSFORME now,
using the aforementioned patch plus a script vaguely similar to this:

wineserver -k
cd "$HOME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Warhammer"
chmod +x warpatch.bin
wine warpatch.exe
