After intsalling and running with wine 1.1.44, after login it automatically downloads and applies an update. I did notice that trying to click anything would result in the application hanging and xfire turning in to a defunct process in ps. When entering username, tabbing to next field, entering password, then pressing enter to login, everything worked fine.
