If anyone's interested, PlayOnLinux offers a Wine version (1.6-rc4-d3d_doublebuffer) that includes the patch. That's likely the best alternative for those of you who can't compile it yourself.
I use that already. A an under run error occurs when ever I exit the game. I think its sound related to ALSA. Here is part of my playonlinux debug file.
