I want to point out that the mmap patch by Alexandre attached to bug 13335 is the proper solution for this issue. There are some issues with it which need to be resolved first before it makes it into Wine. I can't say when it will enter it as it sounded that they were hard to fix even for Alexandre.
I tried the new mmap patch, but I couldn't get World of Warcraft not to crash (see dup bug 16131).
