...so, after a few more hours of making stabs in the dark, I finally stumbled
upon something quite trivial, that for some reason worked.

Namely, if I turn the conditional 'load_flags |= FT_LOAD_NO_BITMAP' in
get_glyph_outline into an unconditional one, things just fit...

Still need to figure out why that works, cause it would suggest that the case
that was looking as if it was working correctly, was actually the one that was
incorrect.
