Many thanks, I've learned a lot from this exercise :-) So Mathcad now starts up (hooray) and displays some basic windows. Then it immediately freezes, and starts displaying the following line over and over in the console: fixme:mlang:fnIMLangLineBreakConsole_BreakLineW (0x361f760)->1024 L"Find out what's new in Mathcad 14 under New Features." 53 -17197070 0xede79c 0xede768 the third number from the right (-17197070) decreases by 1 with each line. There's really a lot of these printed out, and they get 6 of my cores above 50% usage, so I killed it. It looks like it's trying to display some sort of tip of the day (judging from the string it fails to break line on) - I'll see if I can disable it.
