I still have the problem even with the suggested native quartz.dll workaround. 
I'm running wine-1.1.16 on Ubuntu 8.10.

I tried "Native only", which crashes before the main menu comes up.
I tried "Native/then Builtin", and then entered combat several times.  I got
delays entering and leaving combat mode each time.
