I don't know whether they all support(ed) S3TC or whether CMR2 may contain alternate code path not using DXT textures. Note that i740 is supported, an ancestor of i915. (Although I now have s3tc enabled in /etc/drirc, it's clear to me it's not a completely satisfying solution. E.g. from what Scheidegger writes, I would get into trouble if I wanted to use QuakeIII or DoomIII.
