In Windows graphics applications crash rarely - and speaking frankly, you're
lying: when you kill a hanging application using Task Manager then your desktop
resolution will be restored automatically.

In other words it is *Wine* that is changing resolutions, so Wine has to revert
to your normal desktop setup.
