It requires an installation of .NET (and I also had to install DirectX 9). I did it using Winetricks (with something like "sh winetricks corefonts directx9 dotnet20"), which allowed me to launch MGE. Unfortunately, changing Z-buffer settings didn't seem to impact Morrowind.
