An example found in directx 6.1 SDK (samples\multimedia\d3dim\src\d3dframe\d3denum.cpp, Enum3DDevicesCallback function) seems to indicate that testing whether currently enumerated device is a hardware device should be done by checking the dwFlags of the D3DDEVICEDESC structure related to the hardware features (pHALDesc argument).
