Adding Jacek to the bug. Perhaps the game is using some kind of http call to display the MOTD, and it crashes Moniker for some reason? I haven't tested L4D on Wine yet, but I can confirm that the MOTD is downloaded from the server when the map is loaded up and it looks just like a webpage, so it most probably connects through the http protocol.
