Maybe it depends on build options. My options is (working on 10.16):
configure --prefix=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib --disable-tests --without-gstreamer
--without-wayland --with-alsa --with-freetype --with-opengl --with-pulse
--with-vulkan --with-x --enable-win64
