I just found out that this is NOT a WINE bug. It happens when you run RTCW with a resolution which is not supported by RTCW natively (1680x1050, 16:10 in my case). Switch to a resolution supported in the system settings of RTCW and the game will run fine.
This happens with the native Linux binary, too and so can't be a WINE bug.
