lspci shows: 

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS880
[Radeon HD 4250] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])


I had to go back to 
 MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=1995  
then, indeed it does work. 


 MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=1996
results in a seg-fault.
