hmm, dang .. maybe it's useful to introduce another set of 'MyXXX' helpers
which uses a private heap to track down the problem (selectively replace
HeapAlloc/HeapFree calls with that).
Installer setupapi usage needs to be analysed to figure out what class of API
might cause the problem here.
