I was able to reproduce the problem on PC-BSD 1.5 (FreeBSD 6.3) today and found
that X is running out of two different IPC resources; I was able to run
`glxgears` and steam at the same time after adding these lines to
/boot/loader.conf:

    kern.ipc.shmseg=1024
    kern.ipc.shmmni=1024
