When you create this empty directory, look in ~/.wine/dosdevices Do you have d:->/mount/dir there? How about d:: ? Simple way to reproduce: 1. Inset a CD-ROM and unmount it. 2. Run winecfg and add a drive (doesn't matter where it points to). 3. Restart winecfg - drive gone.
