It does seem to be a complex interaction between Wine, Tarrasch, and Houdini, as the Tarrasch-Houdini combination works in Windows, and Houdini works with other chess GUIs (such as Arena) in Wine. I'm surprised, as I thought that all UCI engines adhered to a common set of rules for exchanging data with a chess GUI -- but obviously that's not the case. The simplest solution is to use Rbyka with Houdini; and I will. Thanks again for your help.
