This appears to be a problem with the Steam in-game community overlay.  Try
disabling that in Steam's settings to see if it helps.  (That's a diagnostic
step, not a solution.)

Since Steam can update spontaneously, it's not necessarily a Wine regression. 
To be sure, you'd have to go back to the earlier version of Wine to see if it
still works well.
