Try running the following to launch the game (assuming your in the Diablo 3 directory).. It works for getting past Retrieving hero list for me when launching it normally doesnt..This was taken from another user on the blizzard forums..
setarch i386 -3 -L -B -R wine Diablo\ III.exe -launch -locale enUS
I tested this and it appears to have fixed the problem. Since I'm using PlayOnLinux, I simply ran setarch i386 -3 playonlinux
From there I launched wine/Diablo3 as normal and played for about an hour.
