I am able to reproduce this bug. Normally, it works fine, but if at any point you try to switch workspaces ( Using Ubuntu 8.10 here ) during gameplay it will render the game permanently trapped in this state regardless of attempts to reboot.
A workaround is to replace GW.dat with a new one ( if you do not have a backup of gw.dat, delete it.
