Is this a duplicate of #24064 - Half-Life no longer starts after latest Steam update (20 Aug 2010)?
You know, this just might be part of #24064. Strangely enough, TF2 for me is completely broken as well - just as a commenter in that bug says - the game crashes as soon as you are supposed to see the 3D game world.
