Short Version: Morrowind doesn't work playable in Ubuntu 8.10. (as I said, playing without music or constant freezes at enemies is NOT an option)
My guess is that somehow the audio handling in ubuntu 8.10 is messed up. In 8.04 only 1 programm was allowed to play sounds, in 8.10 multiple programms can use audio.
Hi Christian, try disabling pulseaudio in Ubuntu. I play Morrowind under Ubuntu 8.10 with no problems (except the 1-2 sec freezes on music change and occasional game crash cca once a week). That said, pulseaudio (and compiz) technologies are really pain when playing Wine games. Switch them off.
