i had the same problem, with wine .40, i've changed it to .39 and no problems in 1280x1024 :D
Alas, I'm pretty sure there's no regression, I've already noted (#23) that .39 crashes for me. I think it's more likely that with 1280x1024 you're being lucky; certainly my experience is that below this resolution the crash doesn't happen, above this resolution it always happens, but at 1280x1024 the game crashes some of the time.
