Sadly the patch does not seem to have helped give joystick control in Independence War 1. Both Independence War 1 and Red Baron 3D are late 90's games so they may be using the same version of dinput.
They probably don't use DirectInput at all, but the "winmm" interface (just like SDL 1.2.x on Windows).
