"setxkbmap en,gr" returns an error: "Error loading new keyboard description"

"setxkbmap gr" doesn't help.

The middle keyboard row - asdf... works; the bottom row does not; parts of the
top row works.

Sometimes, if I randomly type on the keyboard, I can get it into a state where
all the keys that didn't used to work to all produce the same character when
pressed.
