[Bug 17657] Dialogue in Ever17 will not appear unless the desktop is in 16 bpp mode but the game doesn't require 16 bpp in Windows.

Yes, "ClientSideWithRender"="N" does the trick. 
So the bug is with the handling of the XRender extension...
