"Have you tried to change TLS option for your ATI driver in xorg.conf?" Um... no; I try to avoid messing with xorg.conf since Ubuntu does such a good job of dealing with it. Also, see previous section about my competence in such non-GUI matters ;) If this is an ATI problem though, it shouldn't manifest if I try it on a different computer using a different chipset...
