DRM does seem to be related to the problem, and it looks like Amazon has changed their DRM with the new version. I deleted all my DRM books locally, and Kindle for PC 1.14.x started up without any problem. I then re-downloaded those books, and it still starts up (so far, anyway). I can open those books in 1.14.x, but I can't open them in 1.12.x, though they show up in the library. 1.12.x now pops up a message saying "The book could not be opened.
