I tried soften smoke edges, and the whole screen gradually turns white (in puffs of smoke...). As well, whenever you turn soften smoke edges on or off and then exit options, the game crashes and the display stays black (you can alt-tab to show other apps are running, but screen goes black when you release alt-tab).
