I strongly suspect the underlying problem is that Wine has no implementation of the XMLHttpRequest COM interface (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms759148.aspx). That would explain why Google sees this as a Internet connection error. See the test_XMLHTTP() method in dlls/msxml3/tests/domdoc.c (http://source.winehq.org/source/dlls/msxml3/tests/domdoc.c#L1824).
